As we're looking into the concepts of exchange theory I was correlating it to this course. In the macro scheme of things the college education system is also part of the capitalist system. College education has its own set of legislation that dictates its students. Each college campus has teams throughout campus that promote the school's name (uniforms, teams, teammates, uniformity,etc.). School pride after graduation is much like surplus value; it serves only to benefit the University, an institution funded by the power elite. Unless you're attending college on scholarship or receiving government aide, more than likely your parents are paying for your education. If neither of these are your situation and you're not financially well off, you're taking out loans. Loans to gain a piece of paper that you spent your time and years of debt, to learn concepts that other people believe to be important. Mind you these are people; professors, who are being paid by the same universities that are part of the power elite. Professors then, are a mode of production; their product - working individuals only as educated as the power elite want them to be. The gatekeepers so to speak, of whether or not your loans will be paid off. It makes you question the purpose of teachers; to learn course material, and to ensure the grasp of said material. Why then should there be due dates prior to the end of the course? The professor then stands at a contradictory class location - having to choose whether to side with the power elite who pays their salary, or the students (the exploited). They who are living through a situation of their past, who in their debt - really pay the teacher's salary. So the real question is, do the teachers believe the students should pay for their education as a rite of passage? Is it a mutual suffering? A 'I lived through that, so they should too!' situation? Should those who have suffered previous weights upon their shoulders make it their life's lesson to ensure future generations don't suffer in similar ways?
